In a groundbreaking move, the National Youth Orchestra of Dubai (NYO Dubai) is slated to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 20, 2025. This will mark the first time an orchestra from the UAE has been officially invited to play at this prestigious venue. On the historic day, over 60 members of NYO Dubai will share the Carnegie Hall stage with two US-based youth orchestras from New Jersey and Los Angeles.
Under the baton of American conductor and composer, Jonathan Winter Barrett, the performance will feature a special collaboration with renowned Emirati composer, Ihab Darwish. Darwish, a prominent figure in the UAE’s music scene, will premiere one of his compositions in America, contributing to the UAE’s growing cultural footprint globally.
Ihab Darwish, cultural ambassador and the Founder & President of the Emirati Musicians’ Association, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration. “This invitation is a testament to the incredible potential and artistry of our youth. I am delighted to be presenting the American premiere of one of my compositions for these talented young musicians.
As they step onto the Carnegie Hall stage, they will not only carry their dreams but also our nation’s cultural aspirations. This is a moment that will inspire generations,” Darwish stated, highlighting the importance of this event in promoting the UAE’s cultural and artistic ambitions.
NYO Dubai, established in 2018, has rapidly grown into a formidable ensemble with over 200 young musicians aged between 5 to 18 years, hailing from 30 different nationalities. It comprises six orchestras, led by Jonathan Winter Barrett, with the support of a skilled leadership team including Amira Fouad, co-founder, Eva Gräsbeck, Jackie Hayter, Clara Asuaje, and Ronald Vint. Their collective efforts have propelled NYO Dubai to the forefront of youth orchestras in the region, fostering a nurturing environment for young talent.
Amira Fouad, the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of NYO Dubai, reflected on the significance of this achievement. “We are immensely proud to represent the UAE on such a prestigious stage,” she stated. “This moment is a tribute to the dedication and talent of our young musicians, showcasing their artistry and commitment on a truly international platform.”
Apart from their landmark performance at Carnegie Hall, NYO Dubai has also been invited to perform at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, further establishing its reputation as the leading youth orchestra in the region.
Additionally, the orchestra will visit significant cultural institutions such as the Lincoln Centre, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Julliard School. These opportunities will enrich the musical education and international experience of the NYO Dubai members, enhancing their exposure to the global music scene.
